I’ve worked with hundreds of clients for over 30 years, and one of the most common themes is that of passion and purpose. We want a life that matters, to do work that is important to ourselves and others. We want to feel the pulse of passion, not only in our intimate lives, but manifested in our work.
Current research indicates that people who have a strong sense of purpose and community involvement are healthier, happier, and consequently live longer. Purpose in life is also protective against loneliness, which may be even more deleterious to our health than smoking.
I believe one of my most important tasks as a therapist is to help my clients uncover their passions and purpose, to help them remember what makes them come alive. Sometimes we lose our sense of purpose over time, but it may only be dormant, ready to be discovered again…
